Canada Announces 2,000 Additional PNP Spaces for Temporary Workers

Under Canada’s Provincial Nominee Program, an additional of 2,000 temporary foreign workers can be admitted to Canada as PR this year, announced the Canadian Government on March 12.

The PNP, or Provincial Nominee Program, allows all the participating provinces and territories to nominate a set number of immigration candidates for Canadian PR each year to meet the local labor market needs.

In the latest news released on March 12, the Canadian Government said that the additional 2,000 PNP spaces are intended primarily for the existing long-term temporary foreign workers in Canada who are having intermediate skills, classified as National Occupation Code “C” and who have integrated into Canadian society.

“Temporary foreign workers fill long-term labor market needs and contribute to the growth of our economy. We recognize the need to provide opportunities for them to transition to permanent residence — and these additional spaces under the Provincial Nominee Program will do just that.” – said Ahmed Hussen, the Minister of IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada).

IRCC says that the additional spaces in PNP will also help address “worker vulnerability” in the country.
