Multi-year plans announced by IRCC hints at highest immigration targets ever

Mr. Marco Mendicino, the minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship announced a new multi-year level immigration plan which is set to welcome 401,000 new permanent residents in the year 2021, the highest number of new residents in history.

Due to COVID-19, immigration to Canada was quite limited in the year 2020, further prompting the government of Canada to set higher targets for 2021 to support in the economic recovery of the country and to make up for the past year’s low immigration numbers.

As a result, some new programs were introduced like Rural Northern & Immigration Pilot Program, Agri-Food Pilot Program to ensure that the government could achieve the new target by 2023.

Federal Government introduces a new Work-Permit Program

Under this program, international students could apply for an additional work permit which will be valid for another 18 months. This is to ensure that the students who failed to gain valuable skilled work experience in Canada due to the pandemic and who are required to apply for their PR could now get sufficient time to find work. Approximately, 52,000 graduates could benefit from this new work-permit program.

Canada modernizes their immigration system

The Canadian government is planning to overhaul and modernize the immigration system which is why the country will invest $750.3 million over the next five years for accomplishing the same. The additional fund will support the country’s historic immigration level plans for 2021-2023.

To achieve this, Canada will update the cumbersome and traditional paper-based Global Case Management System to a digital platform. This new system will enhance operational efficiency, client service, and operational integrity. Aspiring immigrants could expect a more simplified process and faster processing time in near future.
